Why You Should Make Sure To Get Insurance On Your Online Orders

There are many people who ensure that they purchase the insurance option when ordering items on your favourite online store, whether it’s an auction site or popular online store. Then there are also others that tend not to believe in the extra insurance fee because of believing it’s just an extra cost or call it a waste.

Well, I used to not purchase shipping insurance because it was an extra cost and I honestly thought that packages should have been handled with care. Now, I am not a person working for a post office trying to sucker you into spending extra, but after what happened to my package, I thought I should share the experience with you.

I used to collect original film posters and movie memorabilia. Now I had 2 bad prior experiences before with my packages being damaged, but I believed this time, my luck can’t get any worse. However, it did. I finally found an original movie poster I had wanted, which was for one of my favourite movies.

Now, this poster was extremely hard to find, and I am still unable to find another copy of it to this day. I had ordered it from a seller in the UK. With the exchange rate costing quite a bit back than converting the Canadian dollars to Pounds. The insurance was an extra 12 pounds to the cost of the shipping and packaging and the cost of the poster. So I asked the seller how he would be shipping it to me, and assured me that it would have been sent in a sturdy tube, actually he called it “gorilla proof” tube. Anyway, the movie poster was put into an extremely sturdy tube as the seller had stated, and it was hard to crush. I hadn’t purchased the insurance, so when I received it, it was somehow highly damaged. I honestly don’t know how because the tube was sturdy yet it was bent majorly. Both sides of the tube were damaged, meaning the poster was damaged as well. But to think that your package can’t be sent without worrying about it, just plain sucks and is wrong. Something big must have fallen on it, because it would have taken A LOT of pressure to get the tube destroyed like that. When I got to the post office, the postal worker hands it to me as if nothing is wrong and I should have opened it right in front of them. I got home, checked the poster, of course it had been damaged. I complained to the post office for the poor service and lack of handling. Insurance included or not, they should still hand your packages with care! I also told the seller in case he was interested in my case. To date (over 6 months ago) I still have not received a reply from either the post office or seller.

So the next time you order something, think of what happened to my package, and think twice before you don’t consider the insurance option. I always make sure to get the shipping insurance now on whatever I order, if the seller does not offer it, I ask them to find out what it is. When I look at the pictures of the tube, it truly sucks what happened, yet amazes me how stuff like this can happen.

What is Hypersomnia?

Published on Factoidz.com on 12/16/2010

Hypersomnia is characterized by extreme sleepiness during the daytime, and may be extended to long periods during the night. An individual may sleep almost around the clock sometimes. Some of the reasons behind hypersomnia may include cumulative sleep loss due to studying, family demands (like having a new baby to care for), changes in work hours or a busy social life. Other possible causes for hypersomnia may include medications, sleep disorders, psychiatric and medical illnesses. In many cases hypersomnia may be alleviated by making some adjustments in one’s lifestyle habits.

Symptoms of hypersomnia

The symptoms of hypersomnia may include:

Apathy

Difficulty in thinking or making decisions

Feeling curiously exhausted all the time

Feeling sleepy, despite napping and sleeping

Increased risks of accidents (particularly motor vehicle accidents)

Memory or deliberation difficulties

Need of daytime naps

Types of hypersomnia

There are 3 types of hypersomnia. They are recurrent hypersomnia, posttraumatic hypersomnia and idiopathic hypersomnia. Within these types are sub-types such as narcolepsy and Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS),

Recurrent Hypersomnia:

Sufferers of recurrent hypersomnia have continuing severe sleepiness. Even when they sleep 16 to 20 hours a day, individuals still have a huge need to sleep.

Idiopathic Hypersomnia:

Oftentimes, sufferers of idiopathic hypersomnia are criticized for their increased need to sleep. Sometimes, idiopathic hypersomnia is referred to as non-REM narcolepsy; however, the difference between idiopathic hypersomnia and narcolepsy is that the person may sleep as long as 2 hours at a time. The person does not abruptly fall asleep as a person does with narcolepsy; neither does the person lose muscle control as with narcolepsy.

Posttraumatic Hypersomnia:

Posttraumatic hypersomnia is the excessive sleepiness which develops due to physical injury, or from a disease of the central nervous system. For instance, neurosurgery, brain injury, spinal cord injury or infection can cause posttraumatic hypersomnia. This type of hypersomnia generally goes away in a few weeks or a few months.

Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS)

Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS) is an unusual sleep disorder characterized by frequent and extended episodes of hypersomnia. It may also be related with binge eating, behavioral disturbances and more infrequently, hyper sexuality. KLS usually manifests in young people and usually subsides when person reaches middle age.

The cause of KLS is unidentified, though nearly half of KLS patients experienced flu-like symptoms a few days prior to the onset of the first KLS episode. It is believed that Kleine-Levin syndrome may be triggered by a genetic mutation.

Studies have shown that Kleine-Levin Syndrome can be caused by a faulty immune system; thus it is termed as an autoimmune disease. Having an infection prior to the onset of KLS and the genetic connection may be point in the direction of an autoimmune disease.

Treatment for Hypersomnia

Hypersomnia may be self-treated or treated professionally. Talk with your physician regarding which methods will be best for you. In the majority of cases in professional treatment, your physician may prescribe medications to treat hypersomnia. Stimulants such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors and antidepressants are helpful in treating cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic hallucinations, which may or may not be experienced with hypersomnia. It’s essential to remind hypersomnia patients, who are taking a medication called imipramine with stimulant medications, could be at risk of developing hypertension; they should be monitored very closely by their medical professional.

Conclusion

Hypersomnia is at times misdiagnosed as narcolepsy. Both of these conditions are similar in many ways. One major difference is that people with narcolepsy experience unexpected onset of sleepiness, and people having hypersomnia experience increasing degrees of sleepiness. Also, people having narcolepsy discover daytime sleep restorative, whereas people having hypersomnia don’t.

Using YouTube As A Belly Dance Instruction Source

Once instructional videos were the way to learn styles not offered by local teachers or to learn the techniques of famous dancers. These days most everything is on YouTube and video purchasing is dropping. How is this changing the bellydance community? I would say that the results aren’t in yet- youtube is still fairly new, but using it as a teaching source has both big strengths and big weaknesses.

Let’s start with a strength. You can find ANYTHING on Youtube (even if you can’t spell). Any style, practically any dancer, any year, it’s out there somewhere. The opportunity to learn about the dance is extensive. This is clearly a strength, but it’s also a weakness! You can find anything, whether it should be found or not! There’s no real editing or filtering- lots of crud makes it on-line. You can get mislead by bad examples and pick up things that you didn’t intend. Still, because there’s so much of it, if you’re patient, you can see enough to compare the videos and know what you’re looking at.

What about a weakness? It’s short- videos are limited to 9 minutes. That’s hardly enough to call a class. Traditional instructional videos run 90 minutes; enough for a good thorough demonstration and drill. Still, a YouTube snippet is enough to demonstrate a movement. And sometimes it’s mercifully short!

Another good point? It’s FREE! Since most dancers are chronically short of funds (probably from buying too many costumes), free is good. Of course, you get hit by ads sometimes, but where doesn’t that happen these days? The sheer volume of information available for free is amazing.

But a bad point? The quality of the filming is usually not so good, either because of bad resolution, bad camera angle, stupid editing, or all three. (Save me from snazzy spin-ins, fade-outs, and chopped up screens!) Frequently you can’t see what’s really going on and may miss a crucial element. For example, I was uncertain about the hip movements for kahlijee-style because the resolution was just not good enough to see that detail in most videos.

Back to the good: you can get alot of clips that come from the Middle-east itself. You can see what’s going on in the dance sceen there… NOW! And the language differences are not too much of a barrier, now that there’s Arabic translators on-line. Best of all, you can do it when you want it, in the comfort and privacy of your own home (assuming your home is comfortable and private!)

Bad: You can’t interact with the dancer/teacher- you don’t get to ask questions, see it again slower, see it from another angle, get the dancer’s feedback. You gotta keep up or turn in your hip scarf, honey!

And the side effects on the dance community: YouTube is cutting into live teachers’ classes. If they can’t keep a class going, there isnt going to be any ongoing classes anymore. You’ll be stuck with paying for private lessons to get interactive training. Also, the professionals who make good quality videos are being hurt by people who settle for ‘good enough’ videos for free.

So, having said all that, I’ve been mining YouTube to learn styles I’ve been curious about. It’s a slog to find the good stuff but I’m happy with my progress.

The comments on the videos are a mixed blessing- I know people who never read them just on general principles, but I did learn something important from what I thought was a snarky remark (the dancer was not moving her hips as she danced, which in the commentor’s eyes made her dance ‘like a girl, not like a woman’: in other words, girls dance more simply, but the dance should have hip movement).

Where will it all lead? If we start seeing a whole lot of new styles and movements on stages around town, you’ll know YouTube is having an effect….

Travel To Spain – Vital Information For Tourists

If you are planning a vacation to Spain, there are several steps you’ll need to take before your plane ever leaves the ground. From visas to vaccinations, this brief guide will help you get prepared efficiently.

Visa

Citizens of countries within the European Union will not need to have a visa to enter Spain, but you will need to have your national identification document. Resident of the United States and Canadians who are planning to stay in Spain on a tourist basis for less than three months will not need to get a visa before leaving. If you plan to stay longer than that, you will need to obtain a tourist, business or student visa, depending on your situation.

Passports

You will need a valid passport to travel. You can visit http://travel.state.gov/passport for an easy guide on how to obtain your passport. If you are in a hurry, there is an option to rush your passport, but it will cost extra. You will need to have two copies of a recent photograph, and basic identification documents to apply for a passport. Your local courthouse will typically have an area set aside for passport applications. If you are not sure where you should go to apply for your passport, the site mentioned above contains information on all valid passport application offices.

Health Insurance

Anytime you plan to travel overseas, you will need to make sure that you have a valid health insurance policy that will provide you with coverage while you are overseas. Traveling to a foreign country can be demanding enough, but if you are injured and without health insurance, the complications are numerous. If your current health insurance policy does not provide international coverage, it is a good idea to purchase a short-term global health insurance plan that will allow you to travel.

Vaccinations

For children, it is recommended that they be up-to-date on all of their childhood vaccinations, such as Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Tetanus/Diphtheria and Influenza. Adults should also receive a Tetanus shot if it has been more than ten years since your last vaccination. In 2006, outbreaks of Legionnaire’s Disease and measles have been reported, underscoring the need for current vaccinations.

Medications

If you currently take prescription medications, or rely on over-the-counter medication for allergies or other conditions, you will need to make sure that you have enough on hand for the duration of your trip. Inform your doctor of your trip so that they can prescribe any necessary medications or recommend alternatives if you run out during your stay. You may also want to request medicine for motion sickness and/or other common complaints. Skin protection cannot be overlooked during your stay in Spain, and it’s a good idea to pack extra for you and your children.

Emergency Contact Information

Before you leave, create a list of your nearest friends, relatives and physicians on a card and then have it laminated. If possible, have it translated into Spanish to ensure that there won’t be any language barrier if you get into trouble. It is also a good idea to keep the address of the American Embassy in Spain, as well as other useful information with you in case you run into any problems during your trip.

The Second Life Liberation Army (SLLA)

Second Life

Its hard to argue with the popularity of Second Life. The completely immersive 3D interactive world created by Linden Labs currently has 2 million plus users, which are known in game as avatars. This is very different from just a couple of years ago, when membership was hovering somewhere around 100,000 folks.

In the game users are able to create a virtual representation of themselves: their avatar. They are then able to explore massive three dimensional virtual world. They can buy land, make new friends, and shape the world to their liking. Combining elements of roleplaying games with more traditional chat rooms, Second Life has brought online interaction to a whole new level.

One of the things that attracts so many people is its openness and its credo: that Second Life is a world “imagined, created and owned by its residents.” The tagline on their web site reads “Your world, your imagination.”

Trouble in Paradise

For many this promise of a world of their own creation is very attractive. A fun and exciting escape from the hassles of the real world. A safe haven that they can shape into their own desires.

Some, however, see this virtual Utopian dream challenged by the rise of commercial interests in Second Life. Watching as Second Life has become a powerful online phenomenon, many companies such as Reebok, American Apparel and many more have begun to create their own Second Life presence with their own Second Life headquarters and Second Life stores. Political candidates have also entered the Second Life ring, most notably Democratic Presidential hopeful John Edwards.

For some longtime Second Life residents such as the avatar going by the name of Marshal Cahill, such moves do not bode will for the citizens of Second Life. Instead of being a user-created virtual society, Second Life will see itself taken over by commercial interests, just as commercial interests already dominate the real world.

The Second Life Liberation Army

Such concerns prompted Cahill to create the Second Life Liberation Army (or just SLLA for short). Although membership in the organization is small it has made a name for itself in taking part in virtual terrorist activities.

While not as destructive as terrorist activities in the real world, the actions of the SLLA can take their toll on users. Attacks have including gunning down consumers in front of the virtual Second Life Reebok store (avatars gunned down are not actually killed, but find themselves unable to access their accounts for a time) to “nuke” attacks, DoS (Denial of Service) attacks which shut down service to specific areas of the virtual world for a time.

The Goals of the SLLA

So just what is it that the Second Life Liberation Army is after? Its a pretty simple message, and one that Cahill believes cuts to the core of belief in freedom anywhere, be it in real life or in Second Life: a voice for the people. To put it another way, they seek “Avatar Rights.”

The official web site of the SLLA makes their proposal loud and clear: they want Linden Labs to offer up public shares. They would sell a single share to each avatar at a pre-set price. This would give every user of Second Life an equal say in the future development of Second Life: a true virtual democracy.

It is also made clear on their homepage that the Second Life Liberation Army does not seek to create undo damage to the normal operations of the Second Life world. Their targets are the big boys: the Reeboks, the American Apparels, the companies who are trying to turn Second Life from a computerized utopia where everyone has the opportunity to build the virtual life of their dreams into nothing more than a virtual duplicate of the real world where capitalism and the lust for money dictate the lives of its citizens.

Success of the SLLA

As of now, little movement has been made to meet the SLLA’s demands. Linden Labs has made clear that they have little interest in the plans set forward by the Second Life Liberation Army. Even the group’s terrorist activities made little impact on Linden Labs or even the majority of avatars in Second Life until the groups actions began making national headlines in the mainstream press, starting with the Los Angeles Times.

Now papers around the world are starting to pick up on the activities of the Second Life Liberation Army. Videos made of some of the attacks can be found on YouTube, the popular video sharing site. But as knowledge increases, one still has to wonder just how successful Cahill and his SLLA will be in their quest for “avatar rights.”

The Best Pediatric Dentists In The St. Louis Area

St. Louis, Missouri is truly blessed when it comes to the variety and quality of physicians and other medical resources that make their home here. Pediatric Dentists are no exception to this either. When I began looking for some of the most noteworthy pediatric dentists in the St. Louis area, my first instinct was to begin at St. Louis Children’s Hospital which ranks in at number 5 on a list of Best Pediatric Hospitals in Parents Magazine.

It’s at St. Louis Children’s Hospital where you will find:

Dr. Donald V. Heubener

Dr. Heubener’s office is located inside the hospital on the first floor at 1 Children’s Place in St. Louis, just off of Kingshighway. The office offers routine dental care and also has dentists who specialize in cleft lip and palate issues.

Quite honestly, you won’t find a more kid friendly environment at this office. With all of the bright colors, quirky gadgets and such, you nearly forget you’re in the hospital. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Heubener, call 1-314 454 KIDS.

West County Pediatric Dentistry is where you will find the office of:

Dr. Shahnaz Ahmed.

Dr. Ahmed’s office is located at 956 Kehrs Mill Road in Ballwin, MO, just west of St. Louis. The office is open from 8AM – 6 PM, Monday and Tuesday, 9AM – 5PM on Wednesday and 8:30AM – 2PM on Thursday. You can call 636.527.2779 to reach her office.

Dr. Ahmed has obviously spared little, if any expense to make her office NOT look like a dentist’s office. You are see pictures of her office at http://kiddiedentist.com/office.html

If you live in the North County area, you might want to check out the next dentist in our list:

Dr. Candace Wakefield

Dr. Wakefield’s office is located at 13410 New Halls Ferry Rd. in Florrisant. You can find her website at: http://www.thechildrensdentalzone.com/services.html

Dr. Wakefield specializes in bonding, cosmetic dentistry, crowns, and pulpal therapy.

The office is open from 9AM – 5PM, Monday and Wednesday, 9AM – 6PM on Tuesday and Thursday and 7AM-Noon on Friday. Some appointments are available on Saturdays as well. You can reach the office at 314-830-9663.

I’ve saved probably the best dentist for last. He’s not exclusively a pediatric dentist but do NOT stop reading here. I am simply not able to locate another dentist within a 50 mile radius who seems to have the reputation and the level of expertise as this dentist does.

After researching and speaking with his staff, I’m confident that the trip to south St. Louis city to see Dr. Duane Keller will be one worth making. I could go on and on about Dr. Keller. However, I won’t.
