Too many times people are told that they need to stay healthy in order to live a long and productive life. And too many times people ignore this advice. People are caught up in their lives both personal and work related and have little time to devote to staying healthy. We live in a fast paced lifestyle with many bad food choices at our fingertips. The purpose of this article is to motivate young adults to stay healthy.
Everyone seems to know that they need to eat better and exercise. This proclamation seems to be broadcasted in many ways by a lot of different people including healthcare professionals. However, do you really know why you need to stay healthy? Here are some startling facts that everyone needs to know. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), nearly 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year. That equates to about 1 in every 4 people! Do you know of anyone that died of heart disease? Heart disease is the LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH for both men and women. Every year, about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack. Why is this? The answer is very easy. We eat bad and don’t exercise! My aim is to point out the facts and make people aware of these statistics. It is important to know your numbers. What numbers, you ask? These numbers are your blood pressure, your blood sugar and your cholesterol.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has made some good recommendations. They recommend screening for lipid disorders (High Cholesterol) in men between the ages of 25-35 and women between the ages of 20-45 for those with risk factors of coronary heart disease (CHD). CHD is a condition where there is plaque build up in your heart vessels (also known as Atherosclerosis). This plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances found in the blood. In other words, these are the substances that “clog” the arteries over time. This condition can lead to heart attacks, stroke and death. It can be caused by years of eating bad and poor exercise habits as well as genetics. The following are considered CHD risk factors.
Other factors for CHD which you cannot control include your age, gender, and family history of CHD. You can see that this list is general and would include a lot of people. Are you one of those people or maybe know of someone with CHD risk? Now what? You know the facts and you know what you can do to help this situation. Thus, it becomes important for people to be more aware of this problem and seek the recommended screening tests. Once you know your numbers, you need to be consistent with a healthy diet, with healthy supplements such as leptitox and regular exercise.
